About the Speaker

Carole Anne Goble, FREng, FBCS, CITP is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Manchester in the UK. She is Principal Investigator (PI) of the myGrid family of projects and open source software, applying computer science to the furthering of Scientific advances.

Her academic career has been spent at the School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester. She gained her Bachelor of Science degree in computing and information systems from 1979 to 1982, joined the academic staff in 1985, and became a professor in 2000.

Her current research interests include: the semantic web & knowledge management, distributed computing, data and service integration, social computing & collaboration and new models of scholarly communication and digital preservation. Her work is entirely within the context of daat-intensive e-Science/e-Research, particularly in medical informatics, bioinformatics and biodiversity. She applies advances in knowledge technologies and workflow systems to solve information management problems for life scientists and other scientific disciplines. She has successfully secured funding from the European Union, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the US and practically all the UK funding agencies.

In 2012 Carole was nominated for the Benjamin Franklin award for outstanding contribution to open access in biology and was recipient of the first Jim Gray e-Science Award in December 2008. Tony Hey, corporate vice president of Microsoft External Research who sponsored the award, said Goble was chosen for the award because of her work to help scientists do data-intensive science through the Taverna workbench.
