The Degree Ceremony

The Launch Event contained a Degree Ceremony. The four honorary degrees were conferred by the Chancellor of the University of Manchester, The Lord Flowers, and the Vice-Chancellor Professor Martin Harris presented the honorary graduands.

3     Chris Burton Receives his Degree

Chris Burton receives his Honorary Master of Science Degree from Lord Flowers. Chris Burton was in charge of the project to build the Baby Replica.

Note (see photo) that Chris Burton did not have to beamed over the satellite link to get his degree! There was time for him dash over from the Science and Industry Museum and change before the degree ceremony!

Tom Kilburn receives his Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from Lord Flowers.

5     Sebastian de Ferranti Receives his Degree

Sebastian de Ferranti receives his Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from Lord Flowers. Sebastian de Ferranti is a former chairman of Ferranti Ltd., with whom the Manchester computer group had such a long and fruitful partnership, from 1948 until the Ferranti mainframe computer interests were taken over by ICT (then ICL) in the mid-60s.
