Honorary Degrees
Emeritus Professor Tom Kilburn (above), an original member of the
Manchester team that built the world's first stored-program computer,
was awarded an Honorary DSc at a special degree ceremony in the Bridgewater
Hall, as part of the Launch Event for the
University of Manchester's Computer 50 Celebrations on
June 17th 1998, to mark the 50th anniversary of the computer's construction.
Other figures from the world of computing who received honorary
degrees at the ceremony were:
- Professor Michael Brady, an expert in robotics, who received a
DSc;
- Christopher Burton, who has led the rebuild of the first computer,
who received an MSc;
- Sebastian de Ferranti, former Director, Managing Director and
Chairman of Ferranti PLC, who received an LLD.
