from those reported elsewhere on this page. These included :
- ISEA98 The City of Manchester had a programme of
events for its "digital summer 98". A highlight of this was
ISEA98, the International Symposium on Electronic Art, staged jointly by
Liverpool John Moores University (Sep 2 - 4), Manchester Metropolitan
University (Sep 5 - 7) and the Foundation for Art and Creative
Technology.
- Hallé Concert On the evening of June
17th the Hallé Orchestra gave a
concert
to mark the birthday celebrations, as part of its 1998 Proms season. The
opening work was the winning piece written specially for the occasion in a
competition organised for students of the University of Manchester Department
of Music. After the interval the conductor,
Owain Arwel Hughes addressed the audience
briefly to explain the occasion, and pointed out Tom Kilburn in the audience,
who was given a generous round of applause. Over 500 tickets were sold by the
1998 Conference Office for the concert.
- YEDA The Young Electronic Designer Awards for
1998 were held at the
Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester on Sunday/Monday June 28th/29th
(they are usually held in London). The finalists' entries were on public
display for both days, with the main judging on the Sunday and the awards being
presented on Monday evening by HRH the Duke of York at the Awards Presentation
